Distilling Wisdom Through Fairy Tales and Stories

Our 50th anniversary program season launches this Fall! In celebration, we bring back some of the most popular and influential Jungians speaking today – Ann Ulanov on these times of Uncertainty, Gary Sparks who looks at what Jungian thought has to offer for the future, and Jeffrey Kiehl, on ecology and psychology. Two speakers we had long ago return – Stephen Aizenstat has a much anticipated new book and program on Imagination, and Jim Kline brings us a psychological perspective on extraordinary belief systems. And we welcome three new speakers, analyst David Solem presents on Jung and Queerness, noted scholar Susan Rowland focuses on the arts and the imaginal as spurs to creativity, and Muriel McMahon, Canadian analyst and fairytale expert, rounds out the season. Stay tuned for details at OFJ.org , and join us.

Friday Night Lecture: "From Sap to Syrup: Distilling Wisdom from the Forest of Fairytales"

  • Just as the Mother Tree supports and feeds the forest, guiding its growth and ensuring its health, fairytales serve a similar role in the cultural and psychological ecosystem. They nurture our moral and ethical growth, connecting us to deeper truths and wisdoms.

  • Fairytales are central nodes in the human collective unconscious. They distribute psychological and spiritual nutrients, fostering a sense of interconnectedness and support among individuals across cultures and generations.

Saturday Workshop: "Sugaring the Psyche: Crafting Sweet Narratives from Life's Essence"

  • We will begin by identifying personal "Mother Trees"—key stories, myths, or figures that have significantly influenced our growth and understanding of the world.

  • Next we will tap into a story stream and experience the calling forth of sap in a storytelling.

  • We will use the alchemical process of "sugaring" as a metaphor for extracting and sharing the wisdom gained into nourishing tales that can support and inspire others.

  • Rendering insight into action we will explore why we need fairytales now more than ever before.

  • Tales for the journey - we will learn how to let a fairy story have its way with you.
